Tulile

Tulile is a research-driven dramatic short developed through a practice-based methodology exploring embodied performance, female fight choreography, and questions of gender, vulnerability, and agency.

After more than two decades working in film and television, André returned to postgraduate study to re-examine his practice as a storyteller. Tulile became both a creative turning point and a philosophical inquiry into how physical discipline, gender representation, and emotional truth intersect on screen. Drawing from his background in martial arts, he designed an intensive training process for the cast, enabling authentic fight choreography performed by the actors themselves. The project investigated how structured physical practice could challenge conventional portrayals of female strength and vulnerability in cinematic narratives.

The production extended beyond conventional student filmmaking — including the construction of a full-scale boxing ring and location work in Umlazi to situate the story within a lived social context. Accompanied by a written thesis examining gender, performance, and narrative authenticity, Tulile received multiple awards at AFDA, including Best Director. The film represents André’s authored exploration of how disciplined embodied practice can reshape both character and cinematic form.
